Is illegal wood really a problem in Ireland?

Ireland is at the very bottom of the ranking of EU countries on use of illegally cut timber, according to WWF. This is despite the Irish government having agreed to the EU Action Plan on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT). This is particularly significant as up to 50% of timber imported into Europe is from illegal sources.

You can help change this by choosing wood and wood fibre (e.g. paper) products carrying the FSC label. If you’re buying wooden furniture or timber look for the FSC logo or ask the retailer for products that come from responsibly managed forests. Why not have a chat to your purchasing department at work and ask them to consider buying FSC labelled paper?
