The 5 Steps towards FSC certification

There are a number of steps towards a company attaining forest management or chain of custody certification. FSC Ireland does not issue certificates itself. The certification process is carried out by independent organizations called certification bodies who assess forest management and chain of custody operations against FSC standards. Only FSC accredited certification bodies are authorized to issue FSC certificates.

The 5 steps to authorization:

  1. Make contact with a number of FSC accredited certification bodies to obtain quotations on the cost and time required for the certification process. The certification body will need some basic information about your operation and will provide you with information about the requirements you need to fulfil for FSC certification.
  2. It is your choice as to which certification body you would like to work with. It is a good idea to obtain a couple of quotes. Once you have made your decision you sign an agreement with your chosen certification body.
  3. A certification audit takes place to assess your company for certification.
  4. A certification decision is made based on the audit report.
  5. If the certification decision is positive, you receive your FSC certificate. If the audit revealed that your operation is not yet in full compliance with FSC requirements you can apply for further audits after you have made the changes suggested in the certification report.

FSC certificates are valid for five years. Your FSC accredited certification body will conduct annual surveillance audits to verify your continued compliance with FSC certification requirements.
